Every night we let our oldest son pick out two books to read before bed, one that I will read and one for my husband. He recently picked out “Love You Forever” by Robert Munsch and asked me to read it. He snuggled close and we rocked, back and forth, back and forth, back and forth when we go to the pages where the mother sings to her son.
A little while later, after my husband and I had gone downstairs, we heard his voice on the monitor.
“Mommy? Mo-o-ommy!”
“Yes?”
“Will you come and check on me, and if I’m really (weally) asleep, will you pick me and and rock (wock) me back and forth, back and forth, back and forth and sing I love you forever?”
Who can say no to that?
I know he’s at an age when he soon will shy away from holding my hand, hugging me when I drop him off or pick him up, and won’t ask me to play with him…as much.
Now every night, when he’s really asleep (and sometimes, if he calls through the monitor and asks me to check on him, only pretending to be really asleep), I sing “Love You Forever” to him.
The words are so true. As long as I’m living, my baby, he’ll be.

I adored this book as a child! I used to laugh at the child’s antics and even feel sad in the end when the son had to take care of his mother. As an adult, you realize the deeper love between a mother and her child regardless of their age. It’s a heartwarming story that I hope to one day share it will my family if I have one.

This book is a tradition in my family, one I started when I began reading it to my children. They are all grown now. Two are married but there are no grandchildren yet. I did give a copy to my stepson and stepdaughter for them to read their children. I’m happy to see other moms sharing it with their children. It’s such a lovely story.

Thanks, Kim! It’s a beloved book in our house, too. We’re in between the ages in the book (oldest is almost 5)…it’s so easy to see the years flying by when I read this book! This was one of the moments I desperately wish I could bottle. Writing about it seems second best. 🙂
