Writer Meme Monday: 20 Minute Sprints

I’d love to say I’m making great progress on my current WIP.

In my head, it’s pretty epic.

On paper (or the computer), it’s stalled.

Funny thing about writing with a toddler and baby in the house. Most of the time, my writing happens in my head.

When I do get to the computer, I get the document open and catch myself re-reading and trying to figure out where to begin.

Or (as I am now) trying to wrap it up because the toddler has climbed into my lap.

A writer friend of mine recently started challenging herself to 20 minute sprints and has developed a super effective habit of writing 20 minutes and moving her WIP along.

Next week is the first week of summer break, and Big Dude will be home, too, so it’s a good time for me to integrate effective time management plans!

See you next week, hopefully with at least 7 20-minute writing spurts under my belt!

  1. Sorry to hear of the blocks. I hope you tumble them down with the 20-minute sprints! In my third book, once the characters came to life, the plot points went totally out the window as they dictated they wanted to go another direction; and as plot points are fitting in, it’s way earlier than I meant! My goal is to kick out a SHORT first draft of 40K instead of running long like the first 2. We’ll see if I have a whole first draft of my paranormal romance by the end of June!

  2. I know they still make them somewhere, out in the universe….. A tape recorder, digital recorder that’s very mobile. A woman I knew, who had twins gave herself 15 minutes a day to work on complicated needle work or sewing projects. She always managed to accomplish completed projects.

  3. I can’t write until the kids are in bed. I just can’t. Even when they’re happily playing and seem to be content, I get a mental block and can’t seem to force words into a sentence.

I KNOW 20-minutes all in a row is too much to ask while they’re awake, but maybe when they’re asleep…
