She’ll never know. We’ll be out after dark and home before dawn.
Alexander had promised. And he’d been right.
Night after night, he would come for me. My mother at work and the little ones asleep, I crept out. Into the dark hallway. Down the stairs. Across the bridge.
The parties were loud and warm, the air thick with smoke. We made our way home, giddy and drunk on the night’s events.
She’ll never know.
Alexander had promised.
Until one night, when the lights bore down on us, crossing the bridge to home. A car approaching. Fast.
She will now.
This was my first venture out with the Friday Fictioneers, hosted by Rochelle Wisoff-Fields. She hosts a weekly flash fiction challenge with a photo prompt and a 100-word limit. Check it out and join the fun!
As always, happy trails!
Nice work and welcome aboard 🙂

Welcome, and great story. All teenagers do crazy things, but some pay for it dearly.

Thanks, gahlearner! They do…we did….sometimes I think it’s amazing as many of us make it to adulthood as we do.

Almost a fairy tale quality to this – night after night.
And of course in fairy tales you always pay…
I thought something was going to happen to those little ones and then you surprised me.

Thanks, mjlstories! I had not thought of it in terms of being fairy tale-like, but you are quite right!

Isn’t that just how it seems, when you’re young, and excitement is so available? Never a thought for the disaster you could be walking into. Well told.

Thanks, Margaret! I couldn’t agree more. Sometimes it’s too bad the value of experience comes at the cost of experience.

So very good! I was never one to sneak out – Mom always knew where I was. Bit safer that way, I’d think!

Thanks, Dale! I was a borderline troublemaker. Thought I was big time. As it turns out, thankfully, I was neither! Now I can only hope the same for my kids. Thanks for reading and your coment!

Thanks, Snow’s Fissures & Fractures! As a parent now, I rue the day my kids disregard by hard-learned wisdom…

Isn’t it strange that is the very last thought she had before being hit by the car? Great story!

Thanks, Priceless Joy! They certainly were her thoughts, but I’m not sure those were her last mortal ones…

Thanks so much, RR! It took a few revisions to get the rhythm right, but I think it turned out nicely.

Great stuff, TMWR, an excellent tale of young lives being lived and lost, all in 100 words.

Dear MWR,
First off, welcome to Friday Fictioneers. This was good one for your first time around the track. Actually, a good one, period.
I hope that you will put your story on the linkz list. Simply linking up by way of my Friday Fictioneers page is not a good way to get readers. If you need any help, let me know.
Shalom,
Rochelle

Greetings! Thanks for your comment and compliment! I did attempt to put in the linkz code, but see now it is not working. Hmm. I’ll have to have a look and see where I went awry. Shalom and happy trails!
